Treat Your Mamma Right!
It’s that time of year when we remember the special women in our lives and all they’ve done for us. Here are a couple project ideas that are not only great and unique handmade gifts for Mom, but also friendly for Mother Nature.
Blooming Hands – A Project for the Wee Little Ones
First take a clean, used
yogurt cup and decorate it with paint, stickers, or even decoupage with recycled paper. This will be your flower pot. For your stem, take a twig, popsicle stick, or wooden dowel and glue it inside the yogurt cup. You may want to glue something else in the base like a rock to keep the flower pot from being top-heavy and falling over when finished. Lastly, with the help of an adult or older child, take a pencil and trace your child’s hand onto either stiff cardstock paper or craft foam. Cut out the little hands and glue them to your stem. Each little finger makes a flower petal. Decorate as you’d like with glitter, markers, or other embellishments. As a final touch, fill up the bottom of the flower pot with rocks, shredded paper, or raffia. Enjoy a beautiful bouquet that never dies, and always brings the beautiful memory of their little hands.
Paper Bead Jewelry-Simple and Stunning
Children from ages 8-98 will enjoy this next green project . Take a piece of paper such as an old magazine or junk mail and cut it into strips or long triangles.
Taking a round tool such as a bamboo skewer or pen tube, wrap the strips of paper around, and put a dab of glue at the beginning and end of the strip to secure it. To preserve the beads, making them stronger and water resistant, there are a variety of paper bead sealants sold at craft stores and online that can be brushed on. This is especially important if you are using paper such as newspaper where the ink will rub off. Once all of the beads are rolled, coated, and dried, the beads can be transformed into earrings, bracelets, or necklaces. Simply arrange them on a strand of yarn or ribbon, or make it a little more elevated with jewelry wire and clasps/jewelry findings easily purchased at most craft stores.
The finishing touches: The Card
More important than any gift we give the special women in our lives, is the expression of our love and gratitude. When selecting a Mother’s Day card this year, use one that has been printed on recycled paper. You could also opt to make your own card from recycled paper and embellish with pictures clipped from magazines, old cards, and old calendars. There are even some companies (and DIY tutorials online) that make recycled cards and tags embedded with flower seeds, so you’re giving a 2-for-1 gift. Once Mom is done reading your words, she can plant the pieces of the paper in soil and enjoy your gift for days to come.

Eco Easter Project and Tasty Goodness (yep, more)
A couple days before Easter I was watching my niece and nephew and we made this cute little paper-mache egg for their parents. The streamers/crepe paper that we used were being recycled from a previous party. Simply take some white glue, diluted with water in a bowl. Take a baloon and blow it up. The balloon pictured was a water balloon but you obviously want to make sure to fill it up with air because you'll be popping it later. Wrap the paper mache and paint on the glue in layers, making it thick enough to be sturdy. Dry overnight or to speed it up-place in front of a fan or put outside in the sun. Once it's all dry you can insert a pin to pop the balloon and cut the egg in half. Once cut, you can add any decorations-maybe paint it up or just add grass and goodies :)
And I don't know why I'm on such a cooking kick lately, but here's another good one :)
Cheesy Crab Tostada
On low, toast a flour tortilla with cheddar cheese and crab meat (precooked), slowly melting the cheese and warming the meat. For sauce, I used some hickory bacon onion ranch dressing. To add a fresh touch, I chopped up some fresh avacado and fresh pickled cucumbers. The fresh pickled cucumbers add a tang and are easy to make. Brine a freshly sliced cucumber with half water and half vinegar-toss in some salt, garlic, onions, any other flavor you'd like infused.
MMMMMmmmmm.

ANNOUNCING: A NEW SHOP :)
I've recently opened a shop called CustomCreativityGal where I'm listing only custom orders showcasing the many types of arts and crafts I make and sell. In my usual JollyJennifer shop, I've been feeling it's a bit too chaotic and mis-matched. I still may continue to use JollyJennifer for pre-made items that I'm looking to sell regardless of the crazy mixture. I'm also planning on diverting some of my product line to LiveItAgain.etsy.com (a username I have reserved but not yet set up as a shop) and that will be for my recycled/upcycled/eco/green items. I continue to have occasional sales at Crafting4Causes though they are fewer and farther between than I'd love. Still doing what I can to help out some great causes. Personally, this month I chopped off my hair, donating a ponytail to Locks of Love and I'm considering donating a large portion of my jewelry line to my local blood bank to give as freebies for those who donate blood. Mexican Bear Lasagna? Whatever it is, it tastes amazing!
Here's my latest creation: tasty goodness.
I rarely follow recipes, and this isn't an exception, but I can share the basics of this tasty creation.
In a square brownie pan I stacked layers of the meat mixture, tortillas, and cream sauce. Baked for about 30 minutes at 350F and viola! Layers of tasty goodness with heart.
The basics:
meat mixture-
bear (Like smokey...my dad's a great hunter and the meat is always enjoyed by our family. We have a specialty processing company prepare the meat so I got it ground and cajun seasoned. A spicy sausage of a more common meat would be just as good I'm sure)
cooked white rice (Cooking for 1 is annoying, so I usually cook a large batch and freeze most for later)
grated zuchinni
grated carrot
shredded cheese
seasonings
cream mixture-
condensed cream of mushroom soup
milk (dilute the soup so it's in between soup and straight from the can)
dried onion
garlic powder
tortillas-plain old white flour do the job :)
I plan to try this one over and over again. I love how the texture of the tortillas keeps it all together unlike lasagna noodles that tend to slip around.
On the size I shredded up some cabbage with some more carrot and zuchinni, tossed in hickory bacon and onion ranch dressing, and devoured :)

Popcorn Balls---mmmmm!
For my friend's birthday last night, we watched a movie. Decided to invest in the bottomless popcorn bag and before leaving got it refilled. We could only really handle so much of course, and not everyone likes cold popcorn but I had a plan...
Here we have about 8 cups of popped popcorn (complete with butter and salt), caramel ice cream sauce, almonds, and toasted coconut marshmallows.
I made sure to chop my almonds first thing finely and mix them with the popcorn in a large bowl. Then I melted my marshmallows (15 full size) and about a Tablespoon of the caramel sauce. It only takes about a minute in a microwave safe glass dish, stirring every 20 seconds. Mix thoroughly and once slightly cooled, form into popcorn balls.
Additional tips:
Make sure to rid all of the old maids (unpopped kernals!)
To me this had the right amount of sweet and salty. However none of the flavors (toasted coconut, almond, caramel) jumped out. Feel free to adjust as you would like it!

-maybe mini m&ms or something for color?

Leftovers Remade-Tonight's Dinner :)
About me: I have a culinary arts degree. I cook a real meal about 1-2 times a week-I'm too busy or too lazy most of the time. I am also a "bigger" gal-I'd love to study and teach nutrition but I obviously have to find the self control to fix myself first :P
Tonight I was starving after church and decided to cook up a real dinner. (I ate the last of the cold cereal for dinner last night anyway, so that wasn't an option.) Here's what I came up with:
Chicken Zuchini Boats served over Pine Nut Couscous
The Zucchini Boats: I took a zucchini, cut off the tops and botoms, and cut in half the long way. I then scooped out the inside (seeds/meat) of the zucchini and chopped it up. I started frying the zucchini halves while I mixed together the filling.
The Filling: I had cooked up some chicken in the crock pot, shredded it, and mixed it with some italian dressing yesterday. I took some of this chicken and put it in the frying pan with the zucchini and zucchini innards to get it warmed up. Warming the oven to 400 degrees F, I then placed the partially cooked zucchini boats in and tossed the chicken filling into the boats. Cover with grated cheese (because everything is better with cheddar), and tossed in the oven while I prepare the couscous.
The Couscous: Couscous is very easy and extremely tasty. It can be found near the pastas or grains. It's like rice but smaller and is actually a pasta. I usually go the lazy route and get the kind that has a seasoning packet. Just bring water to bowl in the frying pan you just started the boats and filling in (deglazes to add extra flavor) and add the couscous to the boiling water. Gently mix in, turn off the heat and cover with a lid. In 5 minutes, the water will be absorbed and you just lightly fluff it with a fork.
Presentation: Scoop up some of the tasty couscous and place the zucchini boat(s) on top. Eat with a fork and knife.

-not the best combo. There was plenty of flavor but maybe too much competing flavors. Has potential, but I don't plan to make this the same way again.

-got some different colors, fun presentation.

-any time you can use leftovers is great. Zucchini is also cheap.

-took maybe 10-15 minutes, super quick!

-Used an oven bread pan, frying pan, measuring cup (clean-only for water), fork, spoon, knife, and plate.

-better than a cheeseburger, that's for sure!

Capture the gifts of 2010, Big plans for 2011
2010 was a nice year for my Crafting4Causes shop, ended up donating $90 to 5 different charities. Sad though, that I didn't get any December sales to donate.
My JollyJennifer business has been picking up. On and offline. I've been getting into wool work (spining, felting) and also resin and carving rubber stamps. I'm going to be shifting a lot of my focus away from the general jewelry I've made and over to more specific types of jewelry and other items. Be on the lookout for more changes soon, including giveaways hosted here to clear out some inventory!
